The wife of Don Felipe Agoncillo, sewed the first Philippine flag that was unfurled at the Proclamation of Independence on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite. It was in Hong Kong where she was with her husband and children when she received orders from General Emilio Aguinaldo to make a Philippine national standard. This was a task she welcomed as an opportunity to serve her motherland. With the design finally made, she started her task back home in Batangas - with meticulous care. Equally devoted aides were Delfina Natividad (who is Rizal’s niece) and her daughter, Lorenza. Marcella died on May 30, 1946, at 80 years old.
