This is a pageant procession whose main character is Reina Elena, (Empress Helena) accompanied by a little boy who is robed and crowned as Emperor Constantine, (Her son). Today the cast of characters has been enlarged. In some places the event even accommodates beauty queens, movie stars and socialites. The Santacruzan has been further stretched to include three Reinas (queens). Each queen walks under a floral wooden arch carried by a couple or four males. Those who join the procession are free to choose which queen they will identify with. They then hold lighted candles to light her way, together with lanterns and flares that spark like butterflies in the night.
